"Cavalry Battle "
Oil painting on canvas 78x120 cm. This splendid battle takes place at the foot of a rocky promontory between Christian and Turkish cavalry, who clash in a bloody hand-to-hand combat. The painting is an extraordinary example of the qualitative gifts of the artist Antonio Calza. Antonio Calza (1653-1725) born in Verona to a goldsmith father, he did not practice his father's trade but embarked on a career as a painter after fleeing to Bologna when he was only fifteen year. He probably made a trip to Rome where he could study Jacques Courtois.
