"Shepherd In A Landscape By Jan-waclaw Zawado 1891-1982"
Very nice landscape with the shepherd and his sheep oil on canvas measuring 46cm x 65cm plus carved wooden frame 65cm x 85cm signed in baas on the left ZAWADO label on the back of the provenance "Galerie Bénézit" in Paris At the age of 13 the young Zawadowski discovered French painting . In 1910, he entered the studio of Professor Józef Pankiewicz, at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. In 1912, the latter encouraged him to go to Paris. After a short stay at La Ruche (city of artists), he moved to Montmartre. He then became one of the actors of the artistic community of Montparnasse. He then signed his only exclusive contract with the German art dealer: Paul Cassirer who organized several exhibitions for him in Germany. During the war, he spent four years in Spain, notably in Madrid, where he found his Polish painter friends as well as Arthur Rubinstein. In 1919, when the war was over, he was able to return to Paris. In 1920, Modigliani had just died and Zawado took over his studio. In the summer, often in the company of other artists, Zawado goes to their favorite destinations: Saint-Cirq Lapopie, Collioure at the same time as Foujita, Sanary or Le Blanc, as well as Brittany to paint landscapes. Very close to Léopold Zborowski, one of the great dealers of modern art and in particular of Modigliani, he entrusts him with the sale of his paintings. It is this one who asks him to sign his works: Zawado. In 1928, he joined the “Cercle of Polish Artists in Paris”. Between 1920 and 1930, he participated in the artistic life of the first School of Paris. He rubs shoulders with many writers, musicians and painters of course. He exhibited in Poland, Paris (at the Galerie Bénézit) and London. In 1930, Zawado began to stay in Aix-en-Provence. In 1938, he took over the management of the Polish Institute of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1945, he settled permanently in Aix, but kept a studio in Paris. In the 1960s, the first major personal exhibitions took place in Aix, in particular at the Galerie Spinazzola. From now on Zawado exposes especially in the south of France. However, a very large retrospective took place in 1975 in Krakow, followed in 1976 by a personal exhibition in New York. It is therefore a whole world, made up of writers, musicians and especially painters who come to visit him. Georges Duby, about the 1991 retrospective at the Galerie de la Prévôté in Aix writes: "...Zawado's meditation before the light of this country has thus continued for half a century, and one discerns in his work today, collected, what under this meditation, he brought with him from the origins: an emotion in front of the color brought to its strongest vivacity, and above all this ardor, which carries the composition in the gust of gusts... » sending free worldwide
