Vuvi Hut Door From Gabon
A superb, rare, and antique sacred hut door from the Vuvi people of Gabon. Dimensions: 115 cm high by 53 cm wide. Features geometric decoration with a stylized figure. Shows signs of indigenous repairs, attesting to the significance this sacred door held. A similar door appears in the Mazenod volume (page 425; specifically, a door in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection—see photo). Among the Vuvi-Sago of Gabon, designs are predominantly abstract and geometric; doors featuring figurative human representations—like this one—are rare. The total number of such doors is quite limited. Traces of reddish pigment remain in the center. Dark patina; the wood shows erosion at the base. A previous owner attached gongs to it—presumably for use—which I have left in place. Free worldwide shipping.
