Painting Of Monticelli
Artist: Adolphe Monticelli 1824-1886
Please note: This is the same painting, painted on both sides. Oil on wood measuring 40cm x 50cm plus a spectacular period frame. The woodland landscape, in an Impressionist style, is reproduced in the catalogue raisonné, Volume II, No. 953, page 190. It is also reproduced full-page in color in "Monticelli l'étrange" by Mr. Raillard and in the "Monticelli" exhibition catalogue of the Musée de Marseille, held at the Centre de La Vieille Charité from October 12, 1986 to January 4, 1987.
The other side is a gallant scene in a park of remarkable quality, very bold, signed at the bottom right. As is often the case with Monticelli, his painting is characterized by a vigorous touch, powerful impasto served by a bold palette and a treatment of light that is unique to him.
Approach the work, and what emerges is a disordered and seemingly illogical jumble of matter. Step back, and trees, figures, sun-drenched bushes, and a darker undergrowth begin to take shape. Monticelli's paintings are discernible; one searches, scrutinizes, thinks one sees, then no, a Magician of color... This artist was the first to break all academic conventions and drew Van Gogh, Cézanne, and then all painters into endless explorations.
