In this enchanting portrait a young lady has been depicted wearing fashionable clothing from circa 1805. The simple white satin dress with the gathered fabric at the shoulders, the low neckline, and the hairstyle was popular at this time. This elegant portrait is the epitome of the British Regency portrait.

Portraits were in England, as in Europe, the easiest and most profitable way for an artist to make a living, and the English tradition continued to show the relaxed elegance of the portrait-style traceable to Van Dyck. A leading portraitist during the period of our portrait was Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830), painter to George III.

Henry Wyatt was born (in Lichfield) into the Wyatt architectural family. Wyatt had entered the studio of Thomas Lawrence by 1815, becoming a valued assistant to Lawrence, and by 1817 Wyatt established himself as an independent artist. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy with portraits of eminent sitters. He died near Manchester in 1840 after having suffered ill health for a number of years.

An old label on the reverse from John Mathieson & Co, 20 Frederick Street, Edinburgh EH2 2JS (John Mathieson & Co. operated in the early 1930’s and continued to at least the 1940’s).
