Pierre-joseph Chardigny (1794-1866) - Low Relief

Natural son of the sculptor Barthélémy-François Chardigny, he was recognized on November 9, 1810 in Marseille by declaration of Marie Rose Demongé, born December 5, 1767 in Puymichel (Basses Alpes). Pupil of his father until 1813, he was admitted on September 15, 1814 to the School of Fine Arts in Paris where he was taught by François Joseph Bosio and Pierre Cartellier. Elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris on December 2, 1819, he made his debut at the Salon in 1819 with medals and two bas-reliefs representing Homer and Bélisaire. moved to Barcelona in 1831 for the execution for the city of a statue of King Ferdinand VI. A copy was cast for the city of Granada in 1835. He returned to France and was appointed secretary of the Free Society of Fine Arts in Marseilles for the year 1833. In 1836 he proposed in 1836 a coronation project for the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile in Paris. In 1838, following a judgment of bankruptcy, he left for London to escape conviction. During his stay in London, he was a teacher, director of an art school and exhibited a medallion at the Royal Academy. Back in France, he exhibited the busts of Juno and L'Innocence. In 1847, he produced the bronze bust of the mechanical engineer Henri Gambey which adorns his tomb in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. In 1848, he produced a plaster medallion by Joseph Réattu exhibited at the Salon. Three copies of this medallion were made: they are kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum, at the Réattu Museum in Arles and at the Palais Longchamp in Marseille. He then worked at the Louvre Palace on the restoration of the Galerie d'Apollon under the orders of Félix Duban. In 1855, he made a new stay in Spain in Granada, from where he sent a marble bust of the Blessed Virgin for the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris at the Palace of Industry. He sent his two terracotta groups, Satyr and Bacchante and Mercury and Khione, to the Salon of 1866. He died in Paris at the Necker hospital on April 22, 1866.
