François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (known as Jacob-Desmalter) (1770 - 1841)

Exceptional series of 6 chairs from the Empire period bearing the stamp of the famous cabinetmaker François-Honoré-Georges Jacob, the most prestigious of his time, appointed master cabinetmaker of Emperor Napoleon I.

We present here an iconic model from the house of Jacob Desmalter with its front legs turned in such characteristic shapes, its flat rectangular backrest also emblematic of the Jacob family's creations, and its rear legs in the shape of a saber.

The set being made in a very beautiful Cuban mahogany.

Note the brass castors supporting the front feet, they are original and constitute a stylistic rarity with regard to the work of the master cabinetmaker.

We covered these seats with a classic old gold empire fabric with laurel wreath motifs, acquired from a good Parisian house.

Provenance: private collection acquired from the descendants of one of the greatest Polish composers of the 20th century, Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994). The Lutosławski family is a very old Polish noble family. This set would have been ordered by the family directly from the house of Jacob Desmalter which shone in all the countries of Europe, in particular in Poland whose courts and aristocratic circles were very Francophiles at that time. Other pieces from the same collection bearing the same stamp are available.

Each seat is stamped on the front crosspiece: "JACOB DR MESLEE" (Jacob Desmalter, rue Meslée, stamp active from 1803 to 1815)

Very good condition: seats and backrests restored by our upholsterer, new fabric as described. Structure in very good condition, sound, no lack of veneer. The pad varnish has been repolished to restore its luster and shine, some traces of use and small old restorations.
