Marguerite Géry-Galy was born in Bordeaux around 1890. She was notably a pupil of the painter Léon Pierre Félix (1869 - 1940), himself a pupil of Léon Bonnat (1833 - 1922) and William Bouguereau (1825 - 1905). She also studied with the painter Louis-François Biloul (1874 - 1947).
She exhibited several times at the Salon des artistes français, at least in 1931 and 1934 as can be read on the stamp mark printed on the frame at the back of the canvas. A notable singularity distinguishes Marguerite Géry-Galy from her male colleagues since she seems to paint almost exclusively female subjects engaged in modern activities. Thus, it presents women gathered around a tea after a game of tennis, women wearing the boyish cut and dressed in the fashion of the Roaring Twenties. Even on our painting, the little girl is represented with a short haircut with bangs quite in the style of the time.
Marguerite Géry-Galy paints in an elegant Art Deco style subjects that are contemporary to her and that suggest a painter with modern ideas and probably familiar with city and Parisian life.
