Object description :

"Knutson Greta Tzara (1899-1983): "portrait Of Janine Picabia" Swedish; Surrealist, Dated 1927"
"Portrait of Janine Picabia"; drawing, signed lower right, dated 1927, titled lower left; Sun: 48 x 31 cm. Why did the Swedish artist Greta Knutson (1899-1983) fall into oblivion? Is it because she was pushed aside by famous men? She was at the center of events in 1920s Paris, married Dadaist Tristan Tzara, and their home became a meeting place for the avant-garde of the time. She was with the poet and resistant René Char during the war, stayed in France all her life and in her time she was recognized for her exhibitions. Few people know Greta Knutson. As a draftsman, painter and sculptor, Knutson was versatile and constantly evolving. She connects to modernist trends, such as post-cubism, abstraction and surrealism, but chooses her own path. This is also reflected in his writings. For several years, the Norrköping Art Museum has been highlighting female artists who, for various reasons, are not part of the canon of art history. Now the turn has come for Greta Knutson. The exhibition presents a large selection of paintings and drawings as well as sculptures which together give an overall picture of his creation. The works were produced over six decades and demonstrate a dynamic and versatile art. The exhibition and the book present Knutson's production in large format with more than 200 works. For the exhibition, konstmuseet has produced an audio guide that provides another entry where Greta Knutson recounts important events in her life and art in her own words. Information about program activities is posted on the Art Museum's website. As part of the exhibition, a richly illustrated book is published in Swedish and English. It is published in collaboration with Art and Theory Publishing, Stockholm.
