Object description :

"Nymph Going Down To The Bath, Known As La Baigneuse De Falconet, Late 19th Century"
Important alabaster sculpture representing a nymph going down to the bath. The nascent femininity of the nymph, her discreet sensuality refers to the Antique, notably in her drapery. TheNymph at the Bathis inspired by a painting by François Lemoyne. A marble copy is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (81 cm high, inv. no. 1131-1882). The sculpture is in good condition and of a high quality of execution.
Note
Alabaster is a soft natural stone that is also translucent. It allows light to pass through, which gives the sculptures their special aura.
History of the work
Repetition of the statuette from the Salon of 1757, no. 131Nymph going down to the bath. Collection of Madame Du Barry (1743-1793) in Louveciennes (inv. no. M. 1846). Revolutionary seizure, 10 January 1794. Inventoried in 1824 at the Grand Trianon in Versailles. Entered the Louvre before 1855.
