Beautiful white marble bust probably representing an illustrious character, character to be identified, the natural treatment is simply magnificent, the luxury of details of this bust is quite remarkable, look at the streaks of the blazer, the collars, the hair and so many other things such as the eyes and the sobriety of the attitude that Jean Jules Cambos was able to give to this bust make this work a piece of quality as one rarely finds on the market and for this, a large part of his sculptures in marble and busts such as the one we present to you are kept in various renowned museums or institutions. The artist, the sculptor: Jean Jules Cambos, born in Castres on April 28, 1828, died in the same city on May 2, 1917, Related work: Bust of Prévost de Longperrier, dated 1883 and kept at the Louvre Museum. Bust of Alfred de Vigny, dated 1866 and kept at Versailles. Bust of the brilliant Auger, Versailles. Bust of Louis XIV, National Library of France. Bust of Henry IV. Bust of Gambetta. Bust of Mirabeau. Bronze “the adulteress” kept at the Musée d'Orsay dated 1869 “the cicada” marble sculpture kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux. ** Participates in the realization of the facade of the Paris City Hall “The Allegory of Poetry”. *** The Museum of Castres where several of his works are exhibited and preserved. Biography: Jean Jules Cambos entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1853 thanks to a pension paid to him by the Tarn department and carried out work on the facade of the college in the city of Castres for which he received a crown of gold in 1879. He then obtained orders from the State, in particular the marble busts of General Auger and Alfred de Vigny intended for the galleries of the Palace of Versailles. In July 1881, he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor[1]. A street in Castres bears his name. He is buried in the Saint-Roch cemetery in Castres[2].
