Rounded bronze plaquette, bust of Christ, 17th century
This plaquette shows left profile of Christ crowned by a radiating halo. On the edge: "EGO SVM VIA VERITAS ET VITA" (I am the Way, the Truth and the Life) surrounded by two leaves. The chased decoration of little cherubs is probably a later addition. This kind of bust of Christ is a widely circulated model on Renaissance medals. It is attributed to an anonymous artist after busts of Christ initiated by medal maker Giovanni de Rossi (1513-1575).
