Italian bronze plaquette with Christ, Northern Italy, late 15th century
This plaquette shows a bust of Christ in profile to left. He is crowned by a cruciferous nimbus decorated with rays. In the upper part are represented the sun on the left, the moon on the right, and the Holy Spirit as a bird inbetween. On the bottom, ·INRI· letters in a label.
This model on plaquette or pax shows ordinarily INRI letters on both sides of the bust (see specimens in National Gallery of Art, and V&A Museum). This layout, less common, is however mentionned by G.F. Hill (G.F. Hill - The medallic portraits of Christ, pp.13-14 / E. Molinier - Les plaquettes, II, p.73 / A. Armand - Les médailleurs italiens, III, p.149).
Excellent condition, remains of gilding.
