Janus Ijo Statue From Nigeria
Large old hardwood statue with thick crusty patina with remnants of red pigment height 94cm This type of statue is quite rare the 4 arms are detached from the body The 4 faces with expressive features are threatening, showing the teeth a round headdress covers the statue or is carved an animal (Dog?) A character holds a staff of command and a sword symbol of power. The outstretched legs rest on a round base reminiscent of the headdress. Truly surreal creation, this double human figure with 4 faces would evoke one of these heroes and illustrious warriors who created, in a more or less mythical past, the Ijo villages. They are often confused with nature spirits. This figure was to take place in a sanctuary. This type of statue has certainly helped to consolidate the reputation of cruel and indomitable warriors of the Ijo free shipping worldwide
