In the year 995, Bishop Aldune and the monks of Lindisfarne fled from the Danes with the body of Saint Cuthbert. At Wredelaw the coffin refused to move until the saint in a vision told his followers that he should rest at Dunholme (Durham). A milkmaid, searching for her cow, led them to the place, and here they found a resting place for the body of the Saint, above which sanctuary stood Durham Cathedral.
