"Piet Van Der Hem (1885 -1961) Hsp Signed Dated 1929, St Paul De Vence And His Lord Tower?"
Listed Dutch painter, Piet Van Der Hem made many stays in Europe which inspired his best paintings, whose complex influences draw both from the body of a Lautrec up to the artistic revolution of Impressionism. Van der Hem had the talent to capture and essentialize the picturesque, - he was also a press cartoonist, making the scenes more typical universal, such as a bullfight scene auctioned 23,600 euros in 2005 but far from his auction record of 185 000 euros for Le Moulin Rouge in 2002. A landscape on the outskirts of Vence was awarded to Christie's for nearly 20,000 guilders (around 10,000 euros) in 2000. Bearing on the back the title "the burg", fortified castle in German, it could be 'act here of a very allegorical representation of the eminently mythical and picturesque fortified village of Saint Paul de Vence seen below; topped with its stately tower also called the tower of the town hall or keep of Saint Paul de Vence, vestige dating from the thirteenth century of an old medieval castle.
