"Miniature Portrait On Ivory Of Napoleon I By François Loritz - 1825"
2021 Year of Napoleon Miniature portrait on ivory representing the Emperor Napoleon I in the green uniform of a colonel of chasseurs à cheval, wearing the medal and the plaque of the Legion of Honor and the Order of the Iron Cross of King of Italy. The work is signed by Loritz and dated 1825. It is presented in its original blackened wood frame with a gilded brass window. It can be seen on the back that the frame has retained its original seal signed by Loritz and also dated, which has never been opened. If the composition is known, our miniature is characterized by the high quality of its execution compared to the mass of mediocre productions that have been made on this subject: great resemblance to the model, blue and frank gaze, reflections of the beard on the cheeks, very fine details of decorations and uniform. But in addition to the technical and artistic qualities of this work, it is the personality of its author and the date of manufacture that make it interesting. Our portrait was produced in 1825, 4 years after the death of Napoleon, under the reign of Charles X, by François Loritz, a former officer of the Empire who became a painter and who had not denied his beliefs despite the censorship of the Restoration. We find traces of François Loritz in the "Black Book of Messrs Delavau and Franchet" which is a directory of the deeds and actions of all the opponents of the Bourbons (mostly former constitutionalists and Bonapartists) listed by the political police of Charles X. Thus , we learn that François Loritz would be of Alsatian or Lorraine origin, born in 1796 and son of a colonel Loritz, former commander of the place of Dieppe under the Empire. François was Lieutenant under the Empire, and also had a brother Captain, also a former officer of the Empire but who preferred to renounce his French nationality under the Restoration to remain in the service of the King of Bavaria (probably under the protection of Eugene de Beauharnais). Thus, François Loritz, who had been imprisoned in 1823 (probably for political reasons) and then filed by the Political Police of Charles X, began to publicly exercise his career as an artist painter by giving drawing lessons around 1824 to finally go out. police radars in 1827: "François Loritz assiduously takes care of his art as a miniature painter. He made two paintings which were admitted to the Louvre exhibition (that is to say that his talent was recognized at the We do not see anything reprehensible in his conduct at the present time. He lives very withdrawn and intends to stay in his furniture incessantly and to settle in Paris to practice his profession as a painter.
