Object description :

"Robert Estienne 1552 "
Very rare folio edition (the third and more successful) of this colossal sum which makes up the "Dictionarium Latino-Gallicum" by the famous scholar Robert Estienne (Roberti Stephani). Latin - French dictionary The third edition (1552) of Robert Estienne's Dictionarium latinogallicum marks the culmination of his work in Latin-French lexicography. Estienne, father of classical Latin-French lexicography (see Starnes 1954), has created for classical Latin and 16th century French a series of dictionaries which includes three parts. For Latin a monolingual Thesaurus intended for scholars, and two Latin-French dictionaries, one the Dictionarium latinogallicum for advanced students, the other, an abridged version, the Dictionariolum puerorum latinogallicum for beginners; for French, Estienne quickly followed the first edition of her Dictionarium with that of her Dictionaire francoislatin and the first edition of the Dictionariolum by that of French words turn into Latin for children (which later became the Petit dictionaire ... ) The desire to realize an equivalent of the Thesaurus was expressed soon. Nicot's Thresor de la langue française in 1606, an essentially monolingual expansion of the Dictionaire francoislatin, represents what the Renaissance could do best in the genre. It was only towards the end of the 17th century that a true general dictionary of French became possible. (source ATILF). Published in Paris by his brother Charles Estienne (Carolum Stephanum / Carolus Stephanus): "... Apud Carolum Stephanum, Typographum Regium, ANN. MDL II. ..." 1430 pages. The title page has a beautiful printer's mark with a clock in its center (rare for this period) surrounded by two sphynges. The owner (Caroli Margaillan), having left his handwritten bookplate, added a smoking pipe to each sphyngus. This family (Estienne) of publisher is known to have had different publisher's mark, especially since in this year of 1552, the company changed location and boss within this same family, driven out by the Reform. Condition: The book comes from a renowned craftswoman in bookbinding (and paper restorations). The work has been completely restored. All pages taken over and restored if necessary. All of the stitched notebooks. And an identical binding, in parchment (goats), was made. The whole allowing the work to start again for five hundred years ... Otherwise scattered foxing, and some old damp stains. The whole is correct. Dimensions: approximately 36.5 x 27 x 10 cm Fast shipping, with tracking. Possibility of hand delivery.
