Saint Anne Trinitarian.
Saint Anne Trinitarian, an important sculpture in the round, carved from a single piece of hollowed out limewood, polychromed and gilded. In a vertical composition, Saint Anne is shown standing, carrying her offspring. Mary is seated on the left arm of Saint Anne, who is holding the Child Jesus, who is sitting on her mother's lap. In her right hand, the saint holds a bunch of grapes, symbolising the Eucharistic gift that Jesus will have to make of his flesh.
As is fitting, Saint Anne is wearing a white wimple overlaid with a voluminous wreath that reaches down to her shoulders and covers her neck and chest, as was customary for married and middle-aged women. The latter, however, reveals a golden headband. She is dressed in a simple blue cloak bordered with gold, falling in deep, broken folds over a long red dress, girded by the pleats of the cloak. The Virgin Mary, with her hair tied behind her head, wears a simple red dress under a blue tunic, which brings a real refinement. Jesus is depicted with curly blond hair, almost naked, a simple cloth draped around his loins to convey humility.
Saint Anne Trinitarian embodies the sanctified maternal figure who, late in life, is granted an unexpected pregnancy by God while her husband Joachim is in retreat outside the city. Thus, the simultaneous presentation of the three characters not only emphasises the family dimension, which is likely to move the faithful, but also the mystery that precedes the Incarnation, the principle of the Immaculate Conception, which has not yet become a dogma. However, Saint Anne is absent from the canonical books that make up the Bible; her legend develops in the apocryphal gospels such as the Gospel of James, the Gospel of the Nativity of the Virgin, the Gospel of Matthew or in the Golden Legend.
The body of the infant Jesus, the neck of the Virgin Mary and the face of St. Anne give a perfect complexion that reinforces the illusion of life.
