A graduate of the Lycée Lavoisier, André Oudot studied from 1912 to 1915 at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in the studio of Eugène Morand. Initially influenced by Cézanne and then Bonnard, he developed his realism towards a softer, more luminous style of painting, while also embracing Fauvism and Cubism without ever losing his close connection to nature.
He first painted landscapes of the Île-de-France region, then those of the Basque Country, Spain, and Italy. In 1936, he discovered Provence and settled in Saint-Rémy. His palette, dominated by subtle grays, softens the deep blues and reds, giving his compositions a restrained elegance and harmonious balance.
Praised by critics such as Wilhelm Uhde and Louis Vauxcelles, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, the Galerie Louis Carré, the Galerie Charpentier, and in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad. After the war, he divided his time between Provence and Normandy, finding his primary source of inspiration in these landscapes.
A member of the Peintres de la Réalité poétique (Painters of Poetic Reality), alongside Brianchon and Legueult, Oudot is considered one of the last heirs of Impressionism, developing a lyrical, balanced style of painting deeply connected to the tangible reality of the artist.
The painting is in good condition.
