Queen Marie Antoinette proclaimed in 1789 the Redoubted painter "The Raphael of flowers". Under his royal protection, he became the Queen's designer, succeeding Van Spaendonck as official painter of the "King's vellum". Redouté will then begin a fabulous work of illustration of botanical works and will specialize in roses. The perfection and realism of his work are more than a scientific study, because it testifies to a great mastery of black pencil and watercolor which shines on the whiteness of the vellum.
