Oil on copper, bears an inscription at the bottom right: N 3 De Castiso, Y Espanola, Espanola Painting of castes, the legend in the cartouche indicating a number corresponds to a known series of caste paintings kept in Mexico which specifies a classification of these mixtures.
The indications specify the ethnic origin of the parents and the child. Castiso here means "quarteron" in Spanish. The mother is represented tenderly carrying her child to the apothecary to receive care.
