Émile Isenbart Besançon, 1846 - Besançon, 1921
Émile Isenbart, born in Besançon on 3 March 1846 and died in the same city on 21 March 1921, was a French painter.
Émile Isenbart was interested in painting from his youth. After studying at the Collège Saint-François Xavier in Besançon, he became a pupil of Antonin Fanart. In 1900, he won a bronze medal at the Salon des artistes français. He was elected to the Besançon Academy in 1883 and received the insignia of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1897.
A street in Besançon bears his name.

Émile Isenbart (3 March 1846 - 21 March 1921), painter, was born in Besançon. At the age of 26, he participated in his first Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. From 1872 to 1921, he exhibited fifty times and presented two paintings per year without any of them being refused by the jury.
Émile Isenbart remained faithful to Franche-Comté until the end of his life. During his travels outside the borders of the Comtois, he never ceased to search for hills, rivers and villages that reminded him of his native region. Initially close to Antonin Fanart in his way of painting, he gradually opened up to the 19th century avant-gardes, in particular the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. His trips to North Africa in 1893 brought a new luminosity to his works, which he used for his regional productions.

Marie Victor Émile ISENBART (Besançon, 1846 - Besançon, 1921)
Born on 3 March 1846 in Besançon into a modest family (his father was a furniture maker), Émile Isenbart studied at the Collège Saint-François Xavier and became interested in painting very early on. He was a pupil of Clément (Antonin) Fanart for a short time, and then trained mainly on his own. His style was strongly influenced by Courbet. He participated in the Salon from 1872, then in the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was a member from 1888. He received numerous awards.
In 1883, he was elected to the Academy of Besançon and promoted to Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1897. A painter of mythological subjects, he is unique in landscape painting: mountain and water landscapes. His work is not limited to the landscapes of Franche-Comté, he explores France, particularly Brittany, including Brest where his wife was born.
Émile Isenbart frequently painted outdoors, in nature, only working in the studio in the wrong season. He is, par excellence, a Franc-Comtois artist. The majority of his paintings are thus devoted to the region:The Black Valley at Consolation, Terrace of the Convent of Consolation, Forest of Firs in the Doubs Mountains, The Banks of the Doubs, Morning on the Banks of the Loue, The Citadel of Besançon as seen from Micaud, The Old Chamars, Marshes at Bélieu,The peat bogs of Bélieu, The village of Noël-Cerneux, The little stream at Beure, Autumn evening near Besançon, Velotte, Herd by the water, Haymaking in Franche-Comté, Peasant woman on the road, First frosts...
Emile Isenbart exhibited in all the major cities of France and several times in Besançon. He was notably the author of large frescoes for the Salle des Pas Perdus in the Palais de Justice in Besançon. The artist died in March 1921 in Besançon.
