"18th Century Marquetry Slant-front Desk "
An elegant slant-front desk in marquetry of plum and ash wood, sycamore stringing, and ebonized wood, on a softwood frame, decorated with geometric motifs of flowers, birds, and baskets. The front opens with three drawers in two rows and a drop-front concealing a secret compartment flanked by two sets of two rows of drawers in a stepped arrangement. Late 18th century, probably from Lorraine, near Nancy. Later locks, leather covering, and restorations consistent with age and use.
