John MacWhirter, a member of the Royal Academy and a student at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh, is among the most representative Scottish landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century. His work is distinguished by his views of the Scottish Highlands, lochs, and islands, rendered with a romantic sensibility attentive to atmospheric effects. The painting depicts Loch Lomond at sunset, with the mountains reflected in the still waters of the loch. The low light of the setting sun illuminates the rocks with warm tones, ranging from red to golden brown, while the soft sky and the reflective water surface lend the scene a contemplative atmosphere, typical of the artist’s finest work. On the right bank, a small rural cottage is visible, the only sign of human presence in the landscape.
