Originally from Ostend, Marthe Velle (1907-1994) practiced various artistic techniques. Trained in the studio of sculptor Michel-Jean Poppe in Bruges, she devoted herself to painting, sculpture and ceramics. Its production was virtually wiped out in a bombing raid during World War II. Now living in Brussels, Marthe Velle is introduced to the work of enamel and metal at La Cambre. Her mastery of engraving techniques enabled her to land a teaching position at the Academies of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Ixelles. The artist has developed a graphic work that has gradually moved away from the figurative in favor of lyrical abstraction. She reveals the life of matter to us through her engravings, which simultaneously evoke the mineralogical, organic, cellular and plant world.
Works at the Ostend Museum, at the Cabinet des Estampes in Brussels.
