Reading the gazette is a frequently encountered Dutch genre scene theme.
David Teniers, Isaac von Ostade, Jan Steen, to name but the most famous, are among the painters of genre scenes of the seventeenth century, the "Golden Age" of dutch painting, but a considerable number of quality artists, whose names are forgotten, have left works recounting the daily life of the Dutch Golden Age.
This little tondo is painted on canvas, it has been cleaned and got rid of a yellow varnish which darkened it.

Modern frame in the spirit of the 17th century.
