An antique Japanese ivory okimono depicting a scholar-painter on a terrace, in the act of creating. The figure holds aloft an unfurled painted scroll, filled with finely chiseled figures and embellished with sepia ochre ink motifs, evoking a symbolic and narrative register drawn from the Japanese imagination.
Alongside it are the traditional attributes of the painter: a tall, square pot containing large brushes with upright bristles, and a hemispherical container on the ground, fitted with a tube, probably for ink or water.
Sculpture signed with a red lacquer seal.
