Object description :

"Emile Noirot (1853-1924) Landscape Near Roanne Dated On The Reverse 1909"
Émile Noirot, whose real name is Benoît Émile Noirot, born June 5, 1853 in Roanne (Loire) and died June 5, 1924 in Le Bourzat (commune of Saint-Germain-des-Fossés) (Allier), is a French landscape painter near de Roanne, near Lyon, oil on canvas, size 50cm by 64cm without frame, signed this work is located on the back, difficult to read and dated 1909 Émile Noirot is the son of Louis Noirot (1820-1902) painter and lithographer and Françoise Jacques. He first had his father as a teacher. In 1874, he left for Paris to complete his apprenticeship in painting. There he was influenced by the Barbizon school with, in particular, Louis Français and Charles-François Daubigny as teachers, moving towards open-air landscape painting. He returned to Roanne in 1881, and as his grandson Dominique Noirot confides: “… he rediscovers with delight and emotion the sites of the Loire Valley, where he remains motionless for long hours, like the hunter in the lookout. He observes, understands and translates the thousand aspects of these austere landscapes… He paints “his river”,… Saint-Maurice and its keep dominating one of the wildest sites in the valley punctuated by the remains of an ancient bridge. »(Extract from page 26 of the book Émile Noirot published in December 1997 and edited by the Jean-Pierre Prebet gallery). Noirot's work is immense and varied, nourished by his travels both in France and in Italy. However, the painter has always remained attached to the Roanne region and the gorges of the Loire, which he chooses to represent on monumental paintings executed for the city of Roanne and the prefecture of the Loire (Saint-Étienne). We can also note that the paintings selected by the Parisian juries were on the same theme: in 1889, within the framework of the Universal Exhibition, Le rocher de la Madone (near the Saut du Perron) received an honorable mention; in 1893, Le Saut du Perron represented France at the Universal Exhibition in Chicago, and the same year Moonrise in Saint-Maurice received at the show the second class medal (highest award since at this show of 1893, the first class medal was not awarded). He was painter of the Department of the Navy in 1899.
