Oil on canvas depicting the edge of the Seine at Île Saint Denis, animated by barges and characters, with a view of Montmartre and the Sacré Cœur in the mist in the background, signed Raymond Besse lower left and countersigned and titled on the back, in a Montparnasse setting. Dimensions of the canvas 46x55 cm Total dimensions, with frame, 62x71 cm Raymond BESSE, born December 26, 1899 in Niort in Deux-Sèvres, died March 5, 1969 in Candé-sur-Beuvron in Loir-et-Cher), painter, draftsman, illustrator, of animated landscapes and urban landscapes. He was raised in Berry and settled in Paris from 1916 where he began to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1923, with Bœuf gras in Issoudun. In 1924 he was represented at the Tokyo International Exhibition. He also exhibits in Ostend. In Paris he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Tuileries from 1926 to 1931, at the Salon d'Automne from 1926 to 1943. He participated in the illustration of Paris 43 published by the city with three drawings accompanying the text of Léon-Paul Fargue Les Saisons from Paris. He also illustrated Bataille-Henri's Journey to the Suburbs (Saint-Ouen) with twelve compositions. He painted landscapes in many regions of France but he mainly devoted himself to the picturesque aspects of Paris and its surroundings, the old quarters and the popular quarters, the Seine, the canals.
