Antique Tessen "Tenerashi-gata" in solid iron (tusk fan) from the end of the Edo / Early Meiji period.

The Tessen were favored by the Samurai and used in places where they were not allowed or not possible to bring a saber, ensuring that they were always armed. In the Edo period, the Tessen were highly regarded and used by the high-ranking Samurai, who could not use their swords, or by the Samurai, who preferred to use it against opponents of lower rank, as using a sword against them was considered improper.

After the Haitorei (Government edict prohibiting sabers, March 28, 1876), this weapon experienced a new craze.

Description :

This Tessen is a cast iron defensive weapon, imitating a closed folding fan, with a tiger in relief on one side and with a dragon in relief on the reverse, which represent the mythical and beneficial guardians of nature, which one also found in opposition on the ancient Temples.

The handle is wrapped in leather and ends with a small silk cord.
