"Kitchen corner - Still life"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Inventory number "2468" on the back of the canvas,

Beautiful work by Provencal master Auguste Chabaud which represents a kitchen corner in a farmhouse, certainly at Mas Martin in Graveson (artist's residence).
This still life by the painter from Graves is decorated with a bottle of wine, a jug, fruit, a plate and a napkin.
Thanks to his often-used color palette and his serif, the artist plays on the play of light and contrasts to represent Provence.

Pupil of Pierre Grivolas at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Avignon. In 1898, he went to Paris to continue his studies. He follows Cormon's lessons as a free auditor and attends the Académie Julian et de Carrière where he befriends the painter Henri Matisse.
Following the agricultural crisis in the South which affected the family property in Graveson, the painter Auguste Chabaud hired as pilot on a cargo ship leaving for Senegal and Dahomey in order to meet his needs.

From 1903 to 1906, he performed his military service in Tunisia. The light and colors of Africa are quickly akin to Fauvism.
From 1906, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants then at the Salon d'Automne and began in 1911 to sculpture.
In 1913, he was mobilized for the First World War. After the conflict, the artist retired to the family home in Graveson. He continues to exhibit in Paris, notably at the Salon des Tuilleries. At the same time, he publishes and illustrates various works.
From 1920, he began his blue period where he used Prussian blue in its purest form, in which Provence, its characters, its interiors and its characters are highlighted.

These works are kept in different museums in France: Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon, Bordeaux Lyon, Nantes, Montpellier .. and abroad.
A museum is also entirely devoted to him in Graveson.

Size: 54.5 x 76.5 cm without frame and 66.5 x 88.5 cm with its modern frame in gilded wood.
