Eliezer And Rebecca German Or Austrian Neoclassical School Circa 1770

Eliezer and Rebecca German or Austrian neoclassical school circa 1870 oil on canvas 100x142cm Important carved and gilded wooden frame 127x167cm Very good condition relining. Eliezer of Damascus, Abraham's servant, is sent by the latter in search of a wife for his son Isaac. He is sent to Nahor, in Chaldea and asks there the help of God to choose the bride. He decides to choose the one that will offer him and his camels to drink. In exchange, he offers Rebecca the jewelry given by Abraham: two bracelets and a ring, accompanied by the letter of marriage proposal. Poussin decides to represent this last scene in his painting, a rare choice because artists generally choose the previous scene, where Eliezer drinks from Rebecca's spring. He also decides not to represent the camels, although they still traditionally appear in paintings representing this subject.
