Portrait of man in blue jacket with tie tied under chin. Oval miniature in a fine gilt bronze frame or is clumsily engraved LIEDER -Metternichh - 1816. Franz Lieder (1780 - 1859) Painter, miniature painter and lithographer who was renowned in Germany and Austria. He exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1797 and 1802. In 1804 he went to Paris, where he was a student of Jacques Louis David and of the Academy school. Protected by Metternich, he followed him to Verona then was sent to Paris to learn lithography. Installed as a painter in Berlin from 1816 to 1819, he painted the royal family there. He exhibited at the Academy of Vienna from 1822 to 1830 and became a member in 1824, then advisor. His first miniatures show a strong French influence, in particular Jean Baptiste Isabey, whose works he was able to see for the Congress of Vienna. Ref. : Painters in miniatures
