A beautiful set of four earthenware plaques, painted by Adelaide Anne Godfrey* around 1879-1880, depicting views of Cannes, the Sainte Marguerite fortress in Cannes, Antibes, and Poggio seen from San Remo.
*Adelaide Anne Godfrey (1827-1915) was a British painter from Brook House in Ash, Kent. She traveled with her father, John Godfrey, a wealthy landowner, and, along with her sister, Christine Eliza Jull (1825-1904), undertook the Grand Tour, which later inspired her to paint views of Southern Europe during the Victorian era, a time when many aristocrats enjoyed the mild climate in Dinard, Cannes, and Nice.
*Adelaide Anne Godfrey (1827-1915) was a British painter from Brook House in Ash, Kent. An album of 24 watercolors depicting views of the French Riviera was sold at Christie's on April 22, 2010.
