18th Century Italian Silver Frame with Italian Silver Coin of 1683
Sizes with oval case 30 H x 23 W;silver frame only 16 H x 12 W

This small frame is made of finely chiselled and embossed silver with baroque motifs and volutes, vegetal and floral decorations.Inside is a rare italian silver coin.It is a Genoese coin called Scudo, from 1683.
On the obverse, exposed to view, is represented the Virgin with the head facing right, on the clouds, crowned with stars, with the Child in her lap and the sceptre straight in her hand in a linear circle and cuts the legend at the bottom.The legend contains the words ET – REGE – EOS – 1669– ISS.
In 1637 Genoa was consecrated to Virgin who became "Queen of the City and Republic".In the Cathedral of San Lorenzo the sceptre, the crown and the keys of the city are celebrated at the foot of the statue of the Virgin.It is decreed that on the coins, on the standard of the captain galley, on that of the tower of the Doge’s Palace and on the main gates of the city walls is represented the Virgin on clouds with the Child, the sceptre and the motto "Et Rege Eos" (to govern) taken from the "Te deum".After a first trial of 1637 (with the face of the Virgin in front) from the following year the iconography was modified and the Virgin is placed with the head turned sideways.The image of the Virgin was taken from a work by Domenico Fiasella (1589-1669), known as Il Sarzanese, who from 1618 lived in Genoa and worked in the workshop of Paggi.This is the period in which Genoese coinage attains the highest artistic quality, also allowed by large-format coins and technological innovations.
ISS stands for "Io. Stephanus Spinula"
On the back of the coin is shown a cross with a six-pointed star in each dial in a beaded circle between two linear circles.
The silver frame is kept inside a case with an oval wooden frame.
