A Louis XV Bergère Stamped J.b Lebas, Mid-18th Century, Circa 1756

Beautiful shepherdess gilded beech wood molded and carved the first part of the reign of Louis XV performed by Jean Baptiste Lebas. With a curviform structure with an enveloping and violin barrel, its base is broad, deep and generous. The extended padded armrests of flared hands overhang recessed lash-back consoles set back in the side rails. The space between armrest, console and side cross is filled with full padded plays. The low seat with a voluble belt is enhanced by a soft padded cushion. The set is based on a base with four short legs and arched. The woodwork is traversed with remarkable elegance by a fine and deep unifying vigorous molding; backrest armrests and consoles of the same jet. This consists of multiple threads and winding pinches enhanced at the shoulder of the anterior sculpted fans highlighting a sober and natural composition with soft and hospitable forms. This movement gives this shepherd a beautiful balance midway between grace charm and comfort. It should be noted the great care given to the connecting elements of an irreproachable quality. Balance, comfort, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this beautiful salon seat. The stamp of Jean Baptiste Lebas is struck on the edge of the front crossbar. All the descriptive features appropriate to a shepherdess identified by André Roubo meet in this beautiful seat; ample and encompassing movement, low base and racy, conjugated to the cask molded with frankness and sobriety. Jean Baptiste Lebas presents us here, the quintessence of the decorative arts of the beginning of the reign of Louis XV pure and harmonious period previous to the rockery.
Observation: This very healthy shepherdess is in a remarkable state of preservation, free of fingerings or grafts. Totally in its original state only the upholstery, upholstery and fabrics (Pansu house) have been completely restored following the rules of the art in force at that time. Jean-Baptiste LEBAS, received master on July 29, 1756, he delivers seats of "careful manufacture" to a prestigious clientele such as the Countess of Barry or the Count of Artois.
