The portraits are painted in the manner of classical cameos, in polychrome on a black ground, set within oval gilt frames, and stand out beautifully against a rare soft green (water-green) pastel ground, characteristic of the Biedermeier period.
The vessels have a circular form with concave sides, a moulded spreading foot, and a slightly flared rim highlighted with gilt lines.
Conceived as a matching pair, they were originally intended for desk use as pen holders.
The A.W.F. mark refers to the porcelain workshop directed by August Wilhelm Fridolin Kister from 1863 onwards.
Although produced in the second half of the 19th century, these pieces deliberately reflect the earlier Biedermeier and Neoclassical taste, which remained highly popular for decorative desk objects.
Excellent condition, without craks, with fully preserved decoration.
