Gypsy Dance Scene, circa 1906-1912
Reminiscent of the Fauvist explorations of Charles Camoin and Henri Matisse, this work by Ciro Cozzolino depicts a Gypsy dance scene beneath large trees, enlivened by a swirling central dancer, a guitar player, and several figures arranged in the background.
The composition is executed without sketching or chiaroscuro, in a direct and spontaneous stroke. Forms and volumes arise exclusively from the juxtaposition of pure, saturated colors, applied in broad strokes. The lightis constructed through chromatic relationships, rather than naturalistic modeling, lending the scene a vibrant and intensely expressive atmosphere.
Through its radical treatment of color, its rejection of drawing, and its pictorial energy, this canvas is fully in keeping with the Fauvism of the early 20th century, in the lineage of dance scenes and figures in motion explored by the great masters of movement.
