Object description :

"Marius Gourdault (1859/1935) '' The De Poulgin Cove ''"
Marius Gourdault was born in Châtellerault, a father gunsmith. He lived in Châtellerault, Le Havre and Paris. In 1873, then aged 14, he studied at the municipal school Lavoisier, where he is a good student. During the year 1877, he is employed at the bridges and roads as draftsman. He exhibited in 1880 his first painting in the salon of the Minister of Public Inspection and Fine Arts and the Champs Elysée. It is found in 1881, attached to the plans and works of Paris. From 1891 to 1904, he climbed all the ladder to finish drawing Principal and Officer of Academy. He participated in the Universal exhibition of 1900. It is proposed for the Palmes Académiques. In Doëlan, he stays with the Mere family, a house not far from Pont-Du, his guests become his friends whom he finds every year for several months, and with whom he establishes almost family relations. He is very influenced by the impressionist school and meets Henry Moret the first time in 1880 (Henry Moret at this time is still a painter with a very classic style, he will become an impressionist post 10 years later around 1890) he finds his friend summer in Doëlan with whom he shares the same love of the Breton countryside and its inhabitants. Days pass between their common passions for painting, hunting and fishing. The two men are alike, they share the same disinterestedness, the same kindness borrows discretion and modesty. Henry Moret offers him several of his paintings and in July 1890 while passing through Pont-Aven, Gourdault meets Maxime Maufra. He will become a friend. The following year at Pouldu he met Paul Gauguin. Marius is a painter of full wind, who leaves in the countryside with his easel and his parasol, his palette, the colors of his painting with the time, become more and more fresh and luminous, It leaves a work still today unknown and very poorly listed, a mystery given his early presence in Doelan from the summer of 1879, the quality of his paintings and his influence on his friend Henry Moret .... This bibliography was produced in 1993 for the exhibition "Henry Moret - Marius Gourdault" in Pouldu by the association of the friends of Marie Henry and resumed in 2009 by Mr. Victor Mauxion for the exhibition "The Valley of the Sénéchal" (summer 2009) in Clohars-Carnoët To find out more, read the biography on Wikipedia, it contains well-referenced details and in-depth, many photos and a selection of interesting paintings.
