18th-century Pastel
Artist: Attribué à Louis Tocque
A very beautiful pastel on paper, mounted on canvas, depicting a man dressed in the fashion of his time, circa 1740, and attributed to Louis Tocqué (1696–1772).
The wig is rendered beautifully, and the complexion of the face is lovely.
According to our research, this may be Monsieur Jacques de Chassaigne, tax collector in Gisors, a similar portrait of whom (hst) was sold at Lafon-Castandet in May 2010, lot 13, and sold for 4,300 € excluding fees.
The pastel is in very good condition.
Stuccoed and gilded wooden frame, with a few small chips that have been “repaired.”

Louis TOCQUE
born in Paris in 1696, died in the same city in 1772.
The son of a skilled architectural painter, he was a student of Nicolas Bertin and later of Hyacinthe Rigaud.
He specialized in portraits
He married a daughter of the painter Nattier and, along with Largillière, was one of the favorite painters of French high society of his time.
He had the rare merit of keeping portraiture grounded in truth.
The poses he gave his subjects are simple and natural. Although he never attained the mastery of a Quentin de la Tour, he nevertheless left behind skillful and truthful portraits of the figures of his time. His portraits capture each subject’s unique character and the distinctive traits of their profession or social status. Tocqué preserved each person’s individual character and intimate likeness.
He enjoyed tremendous success, and praise for his works was widespread
