Aimé Ponson (1850–1924) Combined Attack

Artist: Aimé Ponson (1850-1924)
Full of charm and humor, this little anecdotal animal scene shows a cat lurking in the shadows on the left, watching two mice trying to slip under a canary’s cage.
In the center, a wooden mousetrap witht wo holes, secured with wire loops.
In a chain of predatory desires, the cat watches the mice; the mice prowl near the canary; the canary is caged; and the trapis set—hence the painting’s title, “Combined Attack.”
The work is painted in oil on canvas mounted on cardboard; it is presented in a wide-grooved, gilded frame with a patina and signs of wear, understated and well-suited to the artwork, which measures 40 cm by 58 cm, with the painting itself measuring 30 cm by 48 cm.
In good condition, it is signed in the lower right corner and titled "Combined Attack in the lower left corner".
There are a few chips on the frame, which can be restored or replaced, as desired.
In the tradition of genre painting, which owes much to Dutch painting and Chardin, with a touch of fable.
A cohesive palette of browns, olive greens, and warm grays evokes the atmosphere of a barn interior ora studio.
The canary, with its pale yellow plumage, immediately catches the eye; it is well-placed, slightly off-center, and bringslight and color, balancing the darker area where the cat stands.
A charming piece for a lover of animal paintings from that era, full of mischief and good humor, far more beautiful in person since it is difficult to photograph due to the glazes used by the artist and the sheen of the varnish.

A student of his brother Raphaël Ponson, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1876 onwards, with works such as "Homage to Molière, 1876," "Astronomy, 1885," "Seizure, 1886," and "The Discovery of America, 1905," where he received an honorable mention in 1903 for "The Rat Who Retired from the World, after La Fontaine."
He also participated in numerous exhibitions in the provinces and received many awards (gold medal in Marseille; silver medal in Aix, Marseille, and Montpellier; Diploma of Honor in Avignon).
From 1896, he taught decorative arts to young women at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille.
Finally, his works can be found in several Fine Arts museums:
in Aix "Poor kitchen, 1898",
in Béziers, "the embarrassment of choice",
in Carcassonne, "Old book, old tapestries",
in Digne, "Zemir, and Azor; "Diogenes looking for a man"
in Marseille, "books 1891; in the cellar".
