17th-century Louis XIV-style Rectangular Stool Made Of Turned Walnut
An elegant rectangular stool, or “placet,” made of solid walnut in the Louis XIV style, from the second half of the 17th century. This stool perfectly illustrates the enduring popularity and refinement of turned wooden furniture at the beginning of Louis XIV’s reign. It rests on a base with four vigorously turned legs featuring balusters, rings, and scrolls, ending in flat circular glides typical of this period. The legs are joined by a finely and meticulously turned “H”-shaped crossbar, centered on a knot that reflects a beautiful technical and aesthetic evolution compared to the more austere Louis XIII models.
Its recent traditional upholstery is covered in damask featuring rich floral motifs in shades of gold and burgundy. This period side table, with its timeless charm, is ideal as an end table, footrest, or lounge seat.
In good condition, with standard restoration and maintenance work, particularly on the leg tips.
