Madonna Della Mercede, Lithographic Plate, Circa 1890–1915.
A lithographic plate carved from limestone, depicting the iconography of Our Lady of Mercy, which here—due to folk elements—is likened to that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (with the Child in her arms and the scapular). This type of planographic printing plate was used in Italy by historic religious art printing houses for the mass production of traditional holy cards and devotional images for parishes or confraternities; it is characterized by the mirrored inscription at the bottom, “M. SS. della Mercede,” designed for direct transfer onto paper.
