Louis Cabié (1853–1939) Sunset In The Landes
Artist: Louis-alexandre Cabié
Louis-Alexandre CABIÉ
(Dol-de-Bretagne 1853 – Bordeaux 1939)
Sunset in the Landes
Oil on canvas
H. 38 cm; W. 61 cm

Circa 1880
Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France—and particularly in the Bordeaux region—even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the greater southwest throughout his life. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation in the style of the Barbizon School is evident in his work, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even a landscape in its most unadorned state—he knew how to bring out its vital contrast.
Early in his career, when the painter was still merely an amateur, the moors surrounding Bordeaux in the southwest served as his playground and testing ground. Judging by the style and type of signature, Louis Cabié likely depicted this scene around 1880–85. Is this the Parentis area, where he often ventured during that decade, or the moors deeper within this vast department dotted with pine trees? Here, the painter chooses a depiction in which light shapes the composition. It sets the tones for all the vegetation, as well as the pink and yellow sky.
