Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France—and particularly in the Bordeaux region—even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the greater southwest throughout his life. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation in the style of the Barbizon School is evident in his work, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest scenes, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even a landscape in its most unadorned form—he knew how to bring out its vital contrast.
Early in his career, after his initial steps as an amateur, Louis Cabié became a landscape painter with a keen eye and, above all, a talented brushstroke. It was around Bordeaux and in the Gironde region, where he lived, that every village and every grove became his playground and testing ground. Here, most likely around 1880–85—judging by the style and technique used—Louis Cabié depicts these places near Bordeaux, to which he must have had ties. The town of Parentis-en-Born appears very frequently in the artist’s known early years, as does Pessac. Here, the architecture of the houses seems to confirm this proximity to Bordeaux and the Médoc. Another work depicting the same location was sold by us a few years ago.
