Lucien De Maleville (1881-1964) Snow In Sarladais Dordogne Périgord Sarlat
Artist: Lucien De Maleville (1881-1964)
Lucien de MALEVILLE
(Périgueux 1881 - 1964)
Snow in Sarladais
Oil on cardboard
H. 46 cm; L. 36.5 cm
Signed lower left. Located on the back.
Around 1900
Provenance: Private collection, Sarlat
This unpublished work by Lucien de Maleville is to be placed among his first works in oil. The signature, the technique and the spirit of the composition abound in this sense and give us approximately the dates of 1900/1905. If the place is not precisely located, Maleville still indicates a fairly tight perimeter by “Neige en Sarladais”. Shouldn't this village view take us to the suburbs of Sarlat, outside the old town? The concentration of houses and their period in view of the architecture allows us to imagine constructions during the second half of the 19th century. Few villages in the region are full of so many houses from this period...
The work seems to have been created on the first floor of a house overlooking a garden enclosed by party walls with the neighboring courtyards. Was Maleville therefore in a friend's house to create this youthful work that he composed around his twenties?
This work appears in the inventory of the painter's works, drawn up by the Lucien de Maleville association.
