Virgin Of Cuzco, Hst, 18th Century
This work from the Cuzco School dates from the 18th century. This figure of the Virgin was used to catechize the indigenous peoples in the Catholic faith. The documented history of this devotion begins after the siege of Cuzco, which started in May 1536. Just when it seemed certain that the besieged Catholics would be crushed by a massive Inca army, the Virgin Mary appeared and turned the tide. The event was momentous, even for the indigenous people, who venerate “Our Lady of the Descent” just as much as the Spaniards do. This apparition sparked a massive conversion to the Catholic faith in the Cuzco region, which then spread throughout the Inca Empire.
