Zacharie Noterman or Zach Notermann was born on October 11, 1824 in Ghent and died on January 13, 1890 in Paris (9th arrondissement). Belgian painter and engraver, he was first trained by his older brother, Emmanuel Noterman, before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He lived for a time in Antwerp with his brother before settling in Paris. He specialized in "singeries", humorous paintings featuring monkeys dressed in costumes and practicing human activities (professions, leisure activities and pleasures of the time, such as dice games, music or smoking). He also produced several paintings representing dogs and cats, as well as circus scenes and engravings presenting subjects similar to his paintings. During his career, he participated several times in the painting and sculpture salon in Paris. He died in Paris in 1890. These works can be seen in several museums, notably at the Petit Palais in Paris. The painting presented is painted on wood, the two dogs sitting at the table in front of a plate of waffles, can be found in other of his works, notably the small meal at the tavern and the professor of animals.
