Fireplace Mantelpiece In Bronze, Marble, And Alabaster, Louis XVI Style
Fireplace ornament consisting of a clock with a marble base, a bronze figure, and two vases made of bronze, marble, and alabaster.
The figure depicts a patinated bronze Eros with his bow and arrow, and—characteristic of the Louis XVI style—a bronze quiver adorned with flowers and ribbons in an oval shape on the right side, a torch on the ground, and rows of bronze beads around the edge of the marble. The mechanism, in perfect working order, is signed by Gérome, successor to the House of Thibaut, a famous 18th-century clockmaker. It is topped by a pair of bronze doves, a symbol of love. The vases are made of alabaster, set on a marble base, with bronze foliage.
This set is typical of the taste of the mid-19th century, a period spanning from the Restoration to the reign of Napoleon III.
